Some amazing facts of human body
APPENDIX  TO LIFE
The appendix gets a bad press. It is usually treated as a body part that lost its function millions of years ago. All it seems to do is occasionally get infected and cause appendicitis. Yet recently it has been discovered that the appendix is very useful to the bacteria that help your digestive system function. They use it to get respite from the strain of the frenzied activity of the gut, somewhere to breed and help keep the gut's bacterial inhabitants topped up. So treat your appendix with respect.

GOOSE-BUMP EVOLUTION

Goosepimples are a remnant of our evolutionary predecessors. They occur when tiny muscles around the base of each hair tense, pulling the hair more erect. With a decent covering of fur, this would fluff up the coat, getting more air into it, making it a better insulator. But with a human's thin body hair, it just makes our skin look strange.

Similarly we get the bristling feeling of our hair standing on end when we are scared or experience an emotive memory. Many mammals fluff up their fur when threatened, to look bigger and so more dangerous. Humans used to have a similar defensive fluffing up of their body hairs, but once again, the effect is now ruined. We still feel the sensation of hairs standing on end, but gain no visual bulk.

RED BLOODED

When you see blood oozing from a cut in your finger, you might assume that it is red because of the iron in it, rather as rust has a reddish hue. But the presence of the iron is a coincidence. The red colour arises because the iron is bound in a ring of atoms in haemoglobin called porphyrin and it's the shape of this structure that produces the colour. Just how red your haemoglobin is depends on whether there is oxygen bound to it. When there is oxygen present, it changes the shape of the porphyrin, giving the red blood cells a more vivid shade

GOING VIRAL

Surprisingly, not all the useful DNA in your chromosomes comes from your evolutionary ancestors – some of it was borrowed from elsewhere. Your DNA includes the genes from at least eight retroviruses. These are a kind of virus that makes use of the cell's mechanisms for coding DNA to take over a cell. At some point in human history, these genes became incorporated into human DNA. These viral genes in DNA now perform important functions in human reproduction, yet they are entirely alien to our genetic ancestry.
Many of the most exciting discoveries in all fields of science are being played out in the human body

IMPORTANT USE OF CAMPHOR

Camphor- The effective & healthy mosquito repellent!  As well as Medicinally Useful

Camphor or Kapur is a waxy, white or transparent substance extracted from the wood of the Camphor Laurel tree found in Asia. Camphor has many known medicinal uses-
Ayurvedic recommendations :
Camphor is bitter in taste and has aromatic, emollient, thermogenic, calmative, expectorant and aphrodisiac properties. It is useful in vitiated conditions of Vata, inflammations, cardiac debility, cough, asthma, convulsions, dyspepsia, flatulence, diarrhea and dysentery.
Therapeutic uses :
1.     Ayurveda recommends the use of camphor mixed with oil for external application in inflammatory conditions, anti-itch ointment.
2.     Small quantities of camphor powder can be used as cardiac stimulator.
3.     In traditional medicine, camphor oil is used in the treatment of muscular pains, rheumatism, arthritis, and sprains.
4.     Camphor oil can also be rubbed on chest in cases of coughs and cold, can be used in fever, and flu.

Malaria and Dengue are on a steep rise. We all must be using liquid or the old blue tablet type of mosquito repellents sold under various names. Despite their use, it is common to see mosquitoes hovering around with the best of repellents in action. Secondly, we cannot use these mosquito repellents whole day – be they be of any brand.
Many people are not aware of the Mosquito repellent power of Camphor - a simple solution without side effects and very cost effective. CAMPHOR IS A NATURAL MOSQUITO REPELLENT With effect round the clock! You do not need to burn it for that. There are three easier ways to do it -

1.        Put 2 tablets of commercially available camphor on any warm surface- the device used for the repellent serves the purpose well. Plug it for an hour and see the results! You can do it twice a day- morning and in the night as well!
2.        Place 2 tablets of camphor on different corners of the room or at places where mosquitoes seem to love to stay! Leave them there and they will evaporate in a day or so keeping the air purer and mosquito free.
3.        Take a wide opened cup or plate with water. Drop 2 tablets of Camphor into the water. Keep the cup with water and camphor in your sleeping room. The quantity of water and camphor may differ from room size. Water evaporate at normal temperature. Camphor slowly started dissolving in water. The water evaporates with Camphor smell. Adding little bit hot water gives instant action.
You will be amazed at the results! Do experience it and help spread these healthy tips!

Negative Effects Of Soda !!!

Hellooo frndz! In case you missed it, The New York City Board
of Health approved the ban on the sale on large sodas and "sugary drinks" at restaurants, street carts and in movie theaters last week. It is the first restrictions of its kind in the U.S. The
ban, supported by Mayor Michael Bloomberg in order to reduce the ever growing obesity rates, bars the sale of many sweetened drinks in containers larger than 16 ounces. It is set to take effect on
March 12, 2013.
Soda is not the best thing for the body!  Studies have shown that the average American drinks 45 gallons of soda a year (that can fill a small kiddie pool!). So before you take the next sip, check this out:

The Negative Effects of Soda…….And Diet Soda Too

Kidney Damage: A 2009 Nurses' Health Study of 3,256 women found a 30 percent drop in level of kidney function of participants who drank two or more servings of diet soda daily. Meaning those who drink diet soda has less kidney blood filtering ability.

Risk of Diabetes: Drinking one soft drink a day can increase your risk of getting Type 2 Diabetes by 15 percent, according to a Harvard study.  Two drinks can raise your risk to 26 percent.

Weight Gain: This is a no brainer. The amount of sugar in soda ( there are 16 packs of sugar in a 20 ounce bottle) can cause weight gain, especially if one drinks it daily. In the latest bad news for the soda industry, Danish researchers discovered that drinking non-diet soda leads to dramatic increases in fat buildup around your liver and your skeletal muscles, both of which can contribute to insulin resistance and diabetes. The study revealed that people who drank a regular soda every day for six months saw a 132 to 142 percent increase in liver fat, a 117 to 221 percent jump in skeletal fat, and about a 30 percent increase in both triglyceride blood fats and other organ fat. Their consumption also led to an 11 percent increase in cholesterol, compared with the people who drank other beverages such as water or milk.

Bone Loss: Phosphorus, a common ingredient in soda, can deplete bones of calcium.

T
oo much phosphoric acid can lead to heart and kidney problems, muscle loss, and osteoporosis, and one study suggests it could trigger accelerated aging. The study, published in a 2010 issue of the FASEB Journal, found that the excessive phosphate levels found in sodas caused lab rats to die a full five weeks earlier than the rats whose diets had more normal phosphate levels

.
Dental Decay: Dentists have a name for the condition they see in kids who drink too much Mountain Dew. They wind up with a "Mountain Dew Mouth," full of cavities caused by the drink's excessive sugar levels. Mom always told us, sugar will ruin those pearly whites. Enough said!

It's not just the soda that's causing all the problems. Nearly all aluminum soda cans are lined with an epoxy resin called bisphenol A (BPA), used to keep the acids in soda from reacting with the metal. BPA is known to interfere with hormones and has been linked to everything from infertility to obesity and diabetes and some forms of reproductive cancers.
So the moral of the story is: Put down the soda and pick up some water!
What do you think about the NYC Soda Ban? And some food for thought, what if they ban sugary fruit drinks? How'd you feel about that?

INSOMNIA

             INSOMNIA

Insomnia has become a major disorder in today's stressful and competitive era. Most of the people can't sleep for several reasons and that leads to the sleeping disorder called insomnia. Insomnia is an inability to sleep or chronic sleeplessness.about one-third of all adults suffer from insomnia. Insomnia itself is not a disease, but a symptom of an underlying mental or physical condition of the person.

People with insomnia have one or more of the following symptoms:
Symptoms of insomnia :
  ·  Sleepiness during the day
  ·  General tiredness
  ·  Irritability
  ·  Problems with concentration or memory

THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF INSOMNIA

1. Transient insomnia lasts for less than a week. It can be caused by another disorder, by changes in the sleep environment, by the timing of sleep, severe depression
or bystress.
2.  Acute insomnia is also known as short term insomnia or stress related insomnia. Acute insomnia is the inability to consistently sleep well for a period of less than a month.
3. Chronic insomnia lasts for longer than a month. It can be caused by another  disorder, or it can be a primary disorder. They might include muscular fatigue, hallucinations, and/or mental fatigue. Some people that live with this disorder see things as if they are happening in slow motion, wherein moving objects seem to blend together. Chronic insomnia can cause double vision.

THE COMMON CAUSES OF INSOMNIA :

@Use of psychoactive drugs (such as stimulants), including certain medicationsherbscaffeinnicotine, or excessive alcohol intake.
@ Such as a health condition (like asthma, depression, arthritiscancer, or heartburn); pain; medication.
@ Significant life stress (job loss or change, death of a loved one, divorce, moving).
@ Life events such as fearstressanxiety, emotional or mental tension, work problems, financial stress
@ Emotional or physical discomfort.
@ Environmental factors like noise, light, or extreme temperatures (hot or cold) that interfere with
         sleep.
@ Mental disorders such as bipolar disorderclinical depression, generalized anxiety disorderpost     traumatic stress disorderschizophreniaobsessive compulsive disorder, or dementia,
@ Poor sleep hygiene, e.g., noise or over consumption of caffeine.
@ Physical exercise. Exercise-induced insomnia is common in athletes in the form of prolonged sleep        onset latency.
     @Travelling through different time zones.
@Interference in normal sleep schedule (jet lag or switching from a day to night shift,) for example.

  • SIMPLE TIPS & HOME REMEDY TO OVERCOME  INSOMNIA :
  • Drink tea made from chamomile flower, which soothes the stomach and eases tension. Also try catnip, which is a mild sedative that can safely help you to fall asleep. Another great herb to make a tea of is passionflower, which is considered to be a safe sedative for people who suffer from an overactive mind and anxiety.
  • Another of the useful herbal insomnia home remedies is Valerian Herb which is a safe, non habit forming herb that provides assistance falling asleep without leaving you feeling groggy in the morning. Try to get it in capsule form, because the herb itself tastes unpleasant.
  • Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time in the morning. By doing this, you will be getting your body & other systems into a routine.
  •  Make your bedroom as comfortable as possible. Eliminate noises, light and odors that might affect your sleep. Avoid using your bed as a dining table or any other purpose other than sleep.
  • Avoid napping during the day time as this can disrupt your sleep schedule.
  • Get exercise during the day. This will help you to battle stress. An added bonus is that you’ll begin to feel tired naturally and exercise lets off “feel good” chemicals into the brain. Try not to exercise close to bedtime, because it may stimulate you and make it hard to fall asleep.
  • Eat dinner earlier and avoid heavy snacks before bedtime.
  • Practice meditating or yoga to clear your mind of external worries. Since stress is one of the largest contributing factors when it comes to insomnia, simple stress reduction techniques can go a long way toward being effective insomnia home remedies.
  • Take a warm, relaxing bath about an hour before you go to bed. Add some lavender oil or candles and sit back and relax. As your body cools from the warm water, you will begin to feel sleepy; this is indeed a relaxing insomnia home remedy.
Hopefully, these insomnia home remedies help you to get a better rest everynight. Remember - don’t stress yourself out if you cannot sleep. It’s better to get up and read a book or do something relaxing when you’re struggling with insomnia than to lay in bed wondering why your eyes don’t want to close.
